1st time here. Very nice kaifan. The rice is fluffy & fragrant, cken is tender, moist & has kai mei. The chili & ginger is superb. The chicken rice stall is located inside Hock Seng restaurant
This is the new raved about chicken rice located in the huge Hock Seng Kopitiam in Ara Damansara.
They serve not just kampong chicken but the famous Ma Cao Kampong Chicken which is a free range bird fed only with horse grass and corn.
Hectic and busy, the service was still efficiently courteous. As recommended by a friend, we called to reserved a whole chicken as apparently this chicken runs out fast.
The bird was sufficiently large, taking up 2 oval dishes. The skin had a yellow tinge as is characteristic with corn fed chicken. I was also told by my granny that old chicken that’s pass its laying age also has a yellowish tinge and is usually passed off as kampong chicken to the naive.
But that’s a story for another day.
This chicken served by Buu’s is the real thing. The skin was oily and rich and the meat firm and tasty.
The oil rice was nothing special though- somehow we can’t emulate the fragrance of chicken rice from Singapore.
The chilli sauce was also disappointing- it had the potential of a great sauce but it was too watery.
They also serve a ginger scallion sauce- this was common in the old days but many run of the mill chicken rice establishments aren’t bothered to serve it now. It was a boon to have this sauce- it was tangy and full of flavour and complements the chicken very well.
We ordered a braised kailan with garlic for some fiber- unfortunately it was braised half to death and lost the freshness and the crunch.
Overall, the chicken rice is above average. But one must remember that this is a kopitiam setting. AT RM 110.00 just for the bird, I found it to be very much on the steep side.
Would I recommend it?
Yes. They also have normal kampong chicken and single servings too. Also this kopitiam is huge with lots of other choices and rumour has it that the owner is related to the famous Kek Seng Kopitiam family in Penang.
4/10/2024: Visited again to try half of its kampung chicken (RM45) and it was definitely better than its ma cho chicken. Tasty, juicy and not dry/tough like ma cho chicken. This chicken rice shop is better than many other kopitiam’s chicken rice.
Located inside Restoran Hock Semg Kopitiam. Visited on a public holiday around 12.30pm, it was packed but fast serving. It’s located in a clean, bright & well ventilated kopitiam. Tried half ma cho chicken with one rice at RM57, it’s sold by half or whole chicken. Looked nice but taste bland and the breast part was dry and hard to eat with meat stucked to teeth 😬 Ginger sauce provided was quite good. Many ppl order their kampung or normal chicken instead which may probably be better.
Had the Machao Chicken at RM55/half bird – skin was smooth and silky but felt the meat texture was not as firm & tasty as a machao chicken should be (I have eaten and cooked lots of such chicken). Guess there are many grades of machao chicken and this is not the top tier. Ginger dip was good but the watery chilli dip cannot make it.
I’m not a big fan of hainanese chicken rice however this place really made me come back for more. The chicken is superb and even the soy sauce is of superior quality. They are also very generous with the ginger condiments which I really love. Came a few times and the quality is consistent every time. Worth coming but make sure to be early.
